Since publication of the first volume of The Construction of Buildings in 1958, the five volume series has been used by both lecturers and students of architecture, building and surveying, and by those seeking guidance for self-build housing and works of alteration and addition.

Volume 4, which covers the construction of multi-story buildings, including foundations, steel frames, concrete frames and the various systems of walling and cladding used, has been updated to include the use of structural sealant glazing and suspended frameless glazing, new information on solid brick and block walls, and details of metal stud partitions for the support and fixing of plasterboard finishes for non-loadbearing partitions.

A new presentation has been adapted for this latest edition, with text and illustrations integrated to provide a reader-friendly layout and to aid accessibility of information.
