Tracts on Our Present Money System and National Bankruptcy (Library of money and banking history)

A collection of four previously published tracts on paper currency, public debt, population and wheat prices and the depreciation of English currency which typify the debate over the consequences of the 1797 restriction on specie payments-- a controversy which continued over three quarters of a century and shaped the principles of monetary and banking orthodoxy. While originally critical of the Restriction, Hoare was among the first to express serious doubts about the feasibility of a return to specie payments without an adjustment of all monetary contracts.
