This collection of selected essays includes "Economic theory and 'social reform', " "The development of Hoxie's economics," "The price system and social policy," "The place of value theory in economics. Parts I-II," and "The institutional approach to economic theory." The first five essays from The Journal of Political Economy comprise the foundations of Hamilton's economic theory and reveal the basic thought that consistently guided his career. The last essay marked the formal public launching of "institutional" economics in the United States under that title and Hamilton can justifiably be credited as having been that movement's most vigorous promoter.
