From the Introduction: "...Most palynologists in this country depend upon European keys and manuals as identification aids; fortunately there is sufficient circumpolar floristic similarity at the family and generic levels, in north temperate and arctic regions, to make these references useful. The absence of a North American manual, however, provides the impetus for preparing this contribution to the Pictured-Key Nature Series. Confident identification of many pollen and spore types can only be accomplished by comparison of unknown specimens with a reference collection of microscope slides prepared from authoritatively identified plants. This manual can only serve as a general guide in identification; serious students of palynology should prepare a reference collection appropriate to their own needs. To facilitate such work, the laboratory techniques for preparation of modern pollen samples, as well as fossil sediments, are briefly described...."
