This introductory text covers chemistry, cellular biology and the human organism. Most of the examples cited are from the human organism, as opposed to plants. In this seventh edition, Part I introduces students to the study of biology and includes a brief chemistry chapter, while Part II features two new energetics chapters, as well as sections on metabolism, photosynthesis and respiration. New material on tumour suppressor genes has been added to the cancer section.
