Description
Preface: "If the word mind means anything, it means that which feels" (John Stuart Mill, 1811). That is the sense in which this book investigates the mind and its disturbances - emphasizing subjective experience and its description by the sufferer and the behavior that results. The title Symptoms or Signes in the Mind is "Partition 1, Section 3, Member 1, Subsection 2" of Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy (1621). Burton claimed that one can dissect and display the essential elements of 'melancholy". This is what I have attempted in this account of psychopathology in order to learn about them for subsequent research and treatment.
