In June 1940, Pilot Officer B.A. ('Jimmy') James was captured after being shot down over German-occupied Holland. During the next five years, James and his fellow-prisoners dared countless escape attempts from prison camps, culminating in the tragic 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III, Sagan, in March 1944. James was then sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, which the SS boasted was escape-proof - but James proved them wrong by tunnelling his way out. Again recaptured, he was then under constant threat of sudden liquidation until liberated in the spring of 1945.
