Description
2008 marks the 80th anniversary of the Yorkshire Traction name; this addition to the Glory Days' series is therefore appropriately timed. Universally known as 'Tracky', Barnsley-based Yorkshire Traction origins dated back to 1902 with motorbus operation commencing in 1913 and the Yorkshire Traction name adopted in 1928. Centered on Barnsley, Tracky's operational area radiated out to Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract, Rotherham and Sheffield. As with other British Electric Traction subsidiaries, Tracky became part of NBC in 1969; privatized in the late 1980s and it was one of the few operators to retain an individual identity until its recent sale to Stagecoach. In his first book for Ian Allan Publishing, Sheffield-based author Bob Telfer examines the history and operations of this important operator, from its origins in the years before World War I through to the mid-1970s. As with other volumes in the 'Glory Days' series, this volume includes over 125 color and mono photographs. It will be of interest to residents of the area served by Tracky, those with an interest in the history of public transport in the area and all those keen to discover more about one of the more important of BET's subsidiaries in the Yorkshire area.
