Norristown (Postcard History Series)

Lush, abounding in resources, and stretching along a free-flowing navigable river, the area now known as Norristown was first home to the Turkey, the Turtle, and the Wolf, three flourishing clans of the Lenni Lenape tribe. By the late 1600s, Europeans looking for freedom, opportunity, and land braved the hardships of life in an untamed wilderness and settled in this area. One hundred years before the town's incorporation in 1812, Isaac Norris started the wheels of industry turning when he built a gristmill at the foot of Swede Street. The town of Norris soon became an entrepreneur's delight.
