From 1800, a new generation was re-inspired by the prevalent architectural and artistic "Gothic" vogue. At this time, a passionately ambitious young architect, William Butterfield, created a Gothic missionary college in two years, and the Dean of Canterbury, who wanted the Cathedral to rival St Peter’s, Rome, began the rolling repair program continuing in today’s appeal.
