Ecology, Civil Society and the Informal Economy in North West Tanzania (Making of Modern Africa)

Focusing on North West Tanzania, this text examines the regional economy, determinants of civil society and implications for democratisation, AIDS, population growth, refugees, crops and goods, farming and households and in conclusion, the implications for future development. The general conclusions in the text are that donor initiatives to "adjust" African economies, to achieve "macro-economic stability", good governance and eradication of poverty by promoting economic growth need to target the smallholder economy. The text is based on ten years of field work and secondary research and focuses on four villages using data from 250 interviews, and the author's experiences of participation of daily life in the region.
