The cityscapes and landscapes of early- to mid-twentieth-century America depicted in the paintings of Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967) are studies in quiet and solitude. Yet far from bleak, most are warmed by the light of the early morning or late afternoon sun that so fascinated the artist.
