Environmental Engineering and Pollution Prevention: European Network of Excellence and Partnership (NATO Science Partnership Sub-Series: 2:)

The primary purpose of this book is to present and discuss the main goals, contents, projects, partners and implications of a proposed non-profit European Research network aimed at establishing research nodes at key locations in European NATO and CP countries. The papers and contributions introduce and refine individual and common projects and approaches. All projects are directed at solutions for the heavily polluted 'Black Triangle' of Bohemia, Saxony and Silesia, which was selected as a nucleus for the network due to its geographical location and cross-border environmental problems.
Several presentations outline the general strategy for tackling these critical problems. A number of contributions offer potential and model solutions for individual and partial projects, or new project ideas and approaches. A discussion is presented of the incorporation of heterogeneous environmental systems, computer-based environmental planning, contaminated site assessment, and the selection of remediation technologies, together with descriptions and evaluations of the problems of contamination of industrial and military areas. Examples are given of the application of modern technologies in the conversion process, such as recycling, incineration and supercritical oxidation. Further contributions consider knowledge availability and transfer, and the future challenge of preventing harmful influences on the environment.
