Description
From Introduction: I was having lunch recently with a friend whose business takes him to the far corners of the globe, and he told me he was having a wonderful time with his first German Shepherd Dog. "I thought yoou were just giving me the old build-up," he said, "but it's tre. Shepherds are all over the world. I'm just back fom a six-week world trip, and I've seen them everywhere...." And so it goes for truly the German Shepher is an international favorite, and he fills many different jobs, too. Sometimes you see him working at his original job of herding cattle or sheep. Sometimes he is a movie star. And because of his fabulous capacity for highly specialized training, he is used extensively by state and municipal police in criminal work, tracking and rescue, as well as for the detection of hidden contraband. His nose and his brain are so keen that he can locate buried metal concealed narcotics, or illegal distilling operations. He has notable use with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Such is his capacity for special training that he is naturally acceptable in the US Armed Services where he is used as sentry dog, communications runner, or as a casualy spotter where he learns to seek out and "report" the presence and location of personnel who are injured and unconscious and might otherwise be left for dead." This small part of the introduction is jus a taste of the thoroughness that this book offers in describing in detail the personality, usefulness, and trainability of the German Shepherd bread. The book offers many suggestions for training and discusses breed standard as well.
