Originally written and published in Britain under the aegis of the covert Information Research Department of British Intelligence, these now classic books are characterized by their politically moderate defense of advanced capitalism. As least as important as events are what the author calls the ""almost revolutionary changes in the public mood"" which have occurred. The big events are all here- the Welfare State, the Cold War, Suez, turmoil in Africa, but the book deals too with scientific advances, space travel, crime, youth, religion, education.
