"We not only have to tear down the slums, but try to wipe out the social conditions that caused them." This quote perhaps best sums up Pittsburgh Mayor Joe Barr’s attitude: The sometimes-forgotten mayor was interested in the well-being of all of Pittsburgh’s residents. Joe Barr had been involved with the Democratic Party for twenty-five years and had been a state senator before he served as Pittsburgh’s mayor in the turbulent 1960s. "Malice Toward None" chronicles Mayor Barr’s experiences and contributions, from his handling of racial tensions and Hill District rioting following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, to his hand in building structures that would come to be known as Pittsburgh landmarks, including the Civic Arena and Three Rivers Stadium. Through it all, author Bob McCarthy also presents the view of Mayor Barr’s detractors, making "Malice Toward None" a balanced account of the mayor’s tenure.
