The Failed Promise of the American High School, 1890-1995 (Reflective History Series)

This work examines debates about curriculum policy in the American high school and also looks at changes in the institution itself. The authors argue that beginning in the 1930s, American high schools shifted from an emphasis on academic education to a focus on custodial care of adolescents.
