Here is a road map for the novice researcher contemplating the very broad field affected by and concerned with energy—a guide to help the undergrauate indentify the boundaries of the field, steer through a vast array of materials available on most topics related to energy, identify a specific subject for analysis, and locate a preliminary pool of materials for researching that topic.

Suggested areas for exploration are grouped under six broad headings. In each section annotated are bibliographies of recommended reading for preliminary, intermediate, and advanced research. With very few exceptions, neither journal articles nor public documents have been included. The overwhelming emphasis is therefore on texts and scholarly works, the sources most likely to provide the most concentrated amounts of information. In general, the works chosen for inclusion were chosen on the basis of three criteria: quality, currency, and availablity, and with a bias in favor of the latter.
