Examining the potential of black English as a literary medium, this book considers the historical origins of black English as an linguistic phenomenon, surveys the ways in which it has been represented and the political implications of those modes of representation, and focuses on the dispute between conservative "Anglicists" and the more radical, black-oriented, "Creolists."
