The Dipper (Shire Natural History)

The Dipper is best known for its remarkable aquatic habits, diving underwater to search for prey on the river bed. It is a characteristic bird of clean, turbulent rivers throughout the north and west of Britain. This book describes every species of dipper and then concentrates on the natural history of the Dipper in Britain, its adaptations to an aquatic life style, its distribution, territorial behaviour, breeding habits, diet, movements and mortality. Attention is drawn to threats facing Dippers from the pollution of rivers, especially from the acidification of some upland rivers in Wales and Scotland.
