Closed Doors, Opportunities Lost: The Continuing Costs of Housing Discrimination

Excerpt from the Preface: Civil rights legislation brought some significant changes to this country, including a decline in the most aggressive forms of housing discrimination. Unfortunately, however, neither this legislation nor any of the civil rights legislation that came later has been sufficient to eliminate housing discrimination or the huge cost that it imposes on African American and Hispanic American households - and indeed on us all. The purpose of this book is to document this continuing discrimination and its high costs and to propose remedies. Attacking racial and ethnic discrimination remains one of this country's greatest challenges - and greatest opportunities.
