Huanying: An Invitation to Chinese

The Huanying, Volume 1, Part 1 student workbook accompanies the Volume 1 textbook in the first semester, and contains a variety of activities that integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Communicative activities for pairs and small groups are introduced via student worksheets with clear instructions, requiring minimal teacher preparation time. In Volume 1, students can interview their host families in Beijing, plan a weekend schedule together, look for a lost backpack at a lost and found center, and more. Activities progress from structured (such as vocabulary matching and how do you say it in Chinese?) to open-ended (such as pair or group interviews), encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. Students love a challenge, and games such as vocabulary contests, bingo and crossword puzzles provide fun and meaningful learning activities. Finally, character-writing exercises provide step-by-step guidance on how to write Chinese characters.
