Description
This singular photographic oeuvre reawakens a whole new world of conceptual photography. Exploring with great subtlety the distinctions between the virtual space of photography and real space, Boogaerts projects a powerful sense of wonder. His masterful interpretations of urban spaces, and sites, with their startling interplay of sky and architecture, are based on extremely personal theoretical underpinnings. The work is simply like no other. Here is his 30 year journey - from his first Land Art experiments in the 1970s through to his work with slide collages. Boogaerts' theoretical writings are given a large place, allowing him to further his challenges to accepted ideas of the nature of photography and its place in society. Produced between 1971 and 1990, the entire collection was donated by the artist to the Museum, Boogaerts having largely abandoned photography to study and eventually teach Tai Ji Quan. A book of essays and a separate book of photographs are enclosed within a single binding. With the texts removed from the photographs, the oeuvre stands literally on its own and we are left with a publication that lets nothing come between the viewer and the images. Pierre Boogaerts: Vision, Reality, Image will tour the country throughout 2002.
