To America with the Doukhobours (Canadian Plains Studies 12 (CPS))

This is one of the most important diaries bearing on the settlement era of western Canadian history. The author, himself a Russian and not a Doukhobor, was nonetheless much in sympathy with the Doukhobor way of life. Sulerzhitsky wrote in his diary as he found time and opportunity. Events were recorded as he saw them take place or as he remembered them a day or more later. While the author makes no attempt to hide the human frailties of the Doukhobors or the racial prejudices of the times, he manages to portray, with sympathy and understanding, the great reserves of spirit and will which carried the Doukhobors through trials and tribulations from one continent to another, in search of a home where they might live according to their interpretation of God's will.
