The books are filled with wonderful illustrations from the period. Although developed primarily for correspondence study, they were in use as textbooks by Columbia University, the U. S. Government School of Submarine Defense, the Shop School of the Westinghouse Company, and for reference in leading colleges, shops, and public libraries.

The editor-in-chief was Louis Derr, Associate Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, aided by a corps of distinguished engineers, technical experts, and eminent authorities.
