Season of the Elk

Once there were millions. In a time when America's wilderness stretched from ocean to ocean, great multitudes of elk roamed free in virtually every corner and clime of this country. They thrived in the deserts, plains, coastlands, forests and mountains of all but seven of our present day states. Today the millions have dwindled to thousands. Elk no longer abound on this continent and can be found, for the most part, in only the most rugged and least accessible portions of the Rocky Mountain West. The largest herds exist today in the beautiful Teton mountain country of northwestern Wyoming. There, sequestered in the wilderness of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, some 40,000 elk have taken refuge in a final sanctuary from the onslaught of civilization.
