It should have been a storybook life of ease and privilege. Rosemarie Von Wedel was born in the year 1918 into the German nobility, her mother was a beautiful baroness, her father a handsome, dashing cavalry officier. Her earliest memories were those of castles, country estates and time spent with a loving family."Sparrow" is a true life story about a young girl growing up in Germany during the chaos of the 1920s and the rise of Hitler during the 1930s. Financial difficulties, divorce, and tragically losing her father by suicide meant that the little girl's sense of security and belonging was suddenly shattered forever. Then at the age of eight she contracted polio and was left partially paralyzed, her family emigrated to America but was forced to leave her behind in Germany because of her illness.Through it all Rosemarie remained the"Spatz" an affectionate German nickname given to her by her late father years before, the tough little survivor, the house "sparrow".This is a book about resilience, inner strength, and a young woman's determination to live no matter what fate hands her. A great, emotional read!
