Explore the Secrets of Math: Level 1, Book 1

Level 1 can be used for 1st or 2nd graders. It can turn your students’ addition and subtraction skills around through using the abacus (included). Students will also learn algebraic thinking and word problem solving skills through fun cartoons. For example, three whales are chasing one squid. How many more whales are there than the octopus? (From Explore the Secrets of Math Level 1 Book 1 P 2-31) The answer is 3 – 0 = 3.

(5) Critical thinking. Link missing parts

Addition and Subtraction 1 to 4
Purpose: To teach numbers 1 to 4 and use Child-sized abacus to practice addition and subtraction
(1) Counting the numbers of the shapes and Ones place and adding 1, 2, 3 or 4, adding to 3 or 4
(2) Subtracting 1, 2, 3, or 4 within 4
(3) Word problems and Algebra thinking

Addition and Subtraction 5 to 9
Purpose: To teach numbers 5 to 9 and use Child-sized abacus to practice addition and subtraction
(1) Count the number of the shapes from 5 to 9
(2) Add zero to 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. Adding to 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. Subtracting 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9
(3) Word problems and Algebra thinking

Addition and Subtraction 10 to 90
Purpose: To teach addition and subtraction 10, 20 30, 40, 50, 60,70, 80 and 90 use Child-sized abacus to practice addition and subtraction
(1) Count 10 to 90. Adding to 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90. Subtracting 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90
(2) Word problems and critical thinking

Addition and Subtraction 100 to 900
Purpose: To teach addition and subtraction 100, 200 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 use Child-sized abacus to practice addition and subtraction
(1) Counting 100 to 900. Adding from 100 to 900. Subtracting 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, or 900
(2) Word problems and critical thinking
