Ten years later the Victory Highway was hailed as a feat of engineering when it was constructed across the salt flats. Famous British racers joined Ab Jenkins' Mormon Meteor in setting land speed records in the 1930's which brought the salt flats international recognition. World War II bombers shook the ground as they roared above Wendover Bombing and Gunnery Range on their practice runs. The preparations at Wendover Field for the earth-shattering atomic bomb mission to Japah were among the most guarded, complicated, and intrique-filled secrets of the war. Today, the twin cities of Wendover, Utah, and West Wendover, Nevada, are split by state boundaries. They struggle to co-exist. Still to be decided: Should the Nevada state line be shifted east to incorporate the divided towns into one Silver State Community.
