Description

Old Time Grain Elevators II: Stories & Photography of a Vanishing Way of Life is the second book of the Selyem series that records the legacy of these uniquely North American icons. It features sixty historic, nostalgic stories about grain elevators built since the late 1900s, sponsor pages, and a photo gallery. There are more than 125 color photographs taken since 1990 by noted grain elevator photographer, Bruce Selyem. This book includes elevators from Ohio to California and from Texas and Louisiana to the Canadian Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.) Some of the stories feature elevators from multiple locations like the "Panhandle of Oklahoma", "Canadian Museums", and a "Southwest Travelogue." There's a story titled "Painting Elevators," and another about "Demolishing Old Elevators." There is even a story about an existing elevator (no longer in operation) that was built prior to 1900 and originally powered by a windmill. Old Time Grain Elevators II is not an academic study. Yes, there are facts, figures, and dimensions gleaned from public documents, newspaper accounts, and in some cases engineering drawings and memories. However, even the accuracy of the scattered records still available could be limited by human error or simply the attitude that, close enough was good enough. This nostalgic book provides a snapshot of the information we've gathered from research and hundreds of interviews before that history is further distorted or completely lost. These limited edition books (only 4,000 printed) are all hand-numbered and signed by both the photographer and author.
