Description
THE YEAR IS 2130-an election year-and the newly independent Republic of Florida is a political powder keg. Angry mobs blame the dominant Micro-Tea Party for coastal flooding, impoverishment of the working class and the tyrannical mechanized military police. Meanwhile, the opposition Futurist Party tantalizes the population with dreams of a leisure society made possible by awarding each high school graduate with a Buddy Bot, a personal robot servant to "work around the clock and do the heavy lifting." The charming, seaside town of Lake Worth becomes a central battleground as the Futurists nominate a robot candidate, the charismatic M. Forrest Newcomb, for mayor. Opposition is everywhere, virtually ingrained in a largely techno-phobic and paranoid populace. Gangs of drunken vigilantes roam the streets terrorizing anyone they deem suspicious.
Â
IN THIS POLTICIAL THRILLER, a likeable, idealistic engineer, named Cesar Komenen (CommonMan), gets tangled up in corrupt scheme to rig the election, although he'd rather be bopping down at Johnny Gyro's Dance Emporium with his girlfriend, Jewel. Cesar knows firsthand the benefits of living in a society that embraces technology--his cyber implants compensate for eyes damaged in his youth. Komenen deeply believes in the Futurist philosophy, and wants nothing more than to live a laid-back life in a big house full of mechanical Buddy-Bot servants. But as election day looms, Komenen inadvertently becomes a conspirator in a corrupt and far-reaching scheme that includes mass brainwashing, murder and political manipulation of the highest order.
 Â
KIRKUS REVIEW CONCLUDED, "Powered by a briskly paced and tightly woven storyline. Brownstein's tale is a relentlessly entertaining amalgam of science-fiction mystery and dystopic thriller, with a healthy dose of satire and social commentary thrown in for good measure."
