The Gods of Love and Murder

On a grim October night a luminous woman steps naked out of the freezing water of Lake Ontario, only to be arrested for indecent exposure. But exposure may not be her worst indecency. Or so thinks Henry Niobe, a police officer investigating the disappearances and murders of young women that are deeply unsettling the city and his sleep. After all, Vanessa’s very being heats the air around her to a temperature Toronto air is not supposed to reach in frigid October. Everyone in her vicinity falls in love, or something like it. Yet when two lawyers, Casey Brown and Edward Reagan, reluctantly agree to defend her, the beautiful woman’s presence chills their friendship bitterly close to cracking. And after Vanessa invites the men to a special dinner party, they find themselves being drawn more and more deeply into Detective Niobe’s rash of unsolved killings, killings which they discover to their horror, they may have committed.
