Supreme Court Nominations: Senate Floor Procedure and Practice, 1789-2009

From 1789 through 2006, the President submitted to the Senate 158 nominations for positions on the Supreme Court. Of thee nominations, 146 received action on the floor of the Senate, and 122 were confirmed. On June 1, 2009, the Senate received the nomination of federal judge Sonia Sotomayor to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The data presented in this report do not include this nomination.
