Figs. 7 to 10 illustrate the successive operations in machining the ring. Number of Rings. As the rings must be stretched over the body of the piston, and therefore the pressure on their bearing surfaces cannot exceed 2 = 3£ lbs. per sq. inch, several rings must be fitted to the piston. The best and most usual number is--Number of rings = 7 or 8 (14) To draw the Ring over the piston body requires great care, as with clumsy handling the limit of elasticity may be exceeded, and the ring break. For this operation Reinhardt f has laid down the following theoretical rule:--If the casting is carefully made, it is sufficient to allow J inch to-fe inch instead of J inch, as given above. The measurements in equations 8 to 11 must be re-calculated, to correspond with this alteration. t Zeitschrift dcs Vereines dcutscher Inginicure, 1901, p. 376. Fig. 12. If the riugs are to be sprung out by hand, and slipped into place, they cannot be properly adjusted unless they are opened to an angle of 30 (Fig. 11). It is better, therefore, especially with rings of large diameter, which it is impossible to stretch by hand, to use Keinhardt's device, as shown in Fig. 11. The angle at which theinstrumentopens the ring should be set at 30, as it naturally diminishes when drawing the Pig. 11. Figs. 13-15.--Not often used, ring on. Thepkce is cut from the ring at right angles to the side edges. To make the ends overlap (Fig. 12), or fit a tongue over the joint, a...
