The directions contained in the Board's Circular Order No. 10, of June 1867 (referred to in Section V. of the Board's Report for 1S66-67), for the punctual collection of the Tari revenue in the Patna and Bhaugulpore Divisions by suitable instalments, were not carried out until nearly four months after the commencement of the year under report. Section III.--Country Spirits. 11. The increased receipts shewn in this branch of the Excise revenue have been chiefly effected in the Districts of Calcutta, Patna, Gya, Monghyr, Shahabad, Bhaugulpore, Sarun, Hooghly, and Chumparun. In each case the increase of revenue has been ascribed to the improved condition of the people and the reduced price of the articles of food, &c. The same remarks are generally applicable to the increases shewn in the receipts of other Districts. 12. The enhanced revenue is also attributed, in Shahabad, to the hearty and active co-operation of the Police in checking illicit manufacture; in Uazareebaugh, to the very abundant crop of the Mowah tree, and to the Distillers becoming gradually better acquainted with the Public Distillery system; in Backergunge, to the introduction of a graduated scale of License Fee; in Burdwan, to the establishment of the new Public Distillery at Domohani, in Baneegunge; in Malda, to suppression of the illicit manufacture of Country Spirit; in Cachar, to the increase of population in the District; in Nya Doomka, to the introduction of the use of the Hydrometer; in Kamroop, to several shops having been opened for the sale of Country Spirits in the town of Gowhatty; and in Dinagepore, to the cheapness of Bice, from which the Spirit is made, which has enabled the Dis...
