Excerpt: Ill LOYAL ALLIES The night of Shant's flight through the storm, Melik, his body servant, had searched for his young master all over the estate. He knew the boy left the house in a furious mood. When the storm broke and Shant had not returned, Melik's concern deepened. He searched the streets of Tarsus and even went to the college, thinking perhaps his master had taken refuge in one of the buildings. It was near dawn when he gave up the search and returned to the Tourian mansion. Hurrying up the narrow flight of outdoor stairs against the back wall, he entered the tower room. Quickly, he stole down the inside stairway, water dripping from his clothing at every step. When he entered his master's room, Shant was standing by a window, staring into the garden. At his feet, also, a pool of water had dripped from his garments. "Der em!" Melik scolded tenderly, "You should not treat yourself this way! Come, you must get out of those wet clothes at once." Defdy and hurriedly he stripped Shant of his wet garments, rubbed him dry with big Circassian towels, got him into warm night'clothes and hustled him into bed. Hurriedly, he built a fire in the big stone fireplace and put some bricks on the hot ashes. Carefully, he wrapped hot bricks in towels and slipped them intothe bed. Shant was turning and tossing, feverishly when a soft rap came at the door. Melik hurried to answer. Mrs. Tourian, who had spent a sleepless night of anxiety, stood waiting.
