Excerpt: ... bottom a scroll is carved in, containing the following inscription, done in the lettering of the period: "GEORGE WASHINGTON Colonel Commanding Vibqinia Colonial Troops. After a portrait painted in 1772 by Charles Wilson Peale Now in Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. A gift to Sulgrave Manor in England A. D. 1915. By the National Society Colonial Dames of America." The sad note in this beautiful gift for Sulgrave Manor is that it was primarily intended to celebrate the hundred years of peace between the two English-speaking nations and alas! the presentation is delayed by the bloodiest and most ghastly of world-wars. Miss Comegys and the Vice-Regents of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, have hospitably arranged to have the portrait hang on the walls of Mount Vernon until this cruel war is over, and Sulgrave Manor will be ready to receive it. The portrait may now be seen at Mount Vernon, but as there are probably many members of the Council who will not find it convenient to go there at this time, it was deemed advisable to have a photograph made, so that we may all form an idea of the portrait and the frame in which it is set. This photograph is to be placed eventually in the Colonial Dames room of the George Washington Memorial Building. A box frame has been added as a protection to be used until the portrait reaches its final destination and is placed in Sulgrave Manor.
