The release of rail equipment is faster at Galveston than at any other American port the average car detention being less than three days per car. Grain ships are loaded in less than one day. TRADE and COMMERCE:--The commerce of the port of Galveston places it in the first rank of the leading American ports. In the exportation of cotton Galveston handled more than all the other ports of the United States combined. It also led other ports of the United States in the exportation of grain. More than sixty steamship services plying out of Galveston to the various ports of the world insure excellent service. The port is served by two regular coastwise lines to New York. Galveston has nine banks some of which are rated as the strongest financial institutions in the South insuring the best handling for commercial paper. The more important exports are cotton, cottonseed products, sulphur, oil, wheat, and other grain, breadstuffs, lumber, and food stuffs. Imports consist principally of crude oil, sugar, sisal, tobacco, chemicals, earthen ware, print paper, plate glass and similar commodities. The four export grain elevators have a combined storage capacity of 3,600,000 bushels. SUMMER and WINTER RESORT:--Here is the recognized finest beach automobile speedway in the world, 25 miles long.
