On the appearance of a new and enlarged scries of the Scottish Gardener--rendered necessary by the rapidly advancing state of horticultural science in the present day--it becomes our duty to tender our best thanks to all those who, by their communications, have added to the interest and value of our pages in the past, and to solicit, their continued support for the future--assuring them at the same time, that no effort will be wanting on our part to make this journal a faithful exppnent of Scottish horticulture, as well as the chronicle of all that passes in other parts of the world, which may have any bearing on that science or on the best interests of those who prosecute it as a calling. Our own experience and the testimony of others confirm us in the belief that those who wish to attain to a sound and useful knowledge of their profession as gardeners, must not only carefully note the effects of all operations performed in the field in which they themselves labour, but that they must profit by the experience of others, as detailed in the horticultural periodicals of the day. Hence the urgent necessity that all gardeners, but especially young ones, should read and Januaby 1866 ] A study the writings of those whose every-day practice entitles them to a hearing; and we are proud to think that many such have assured us of their continued support; and by their aid we hope to sustain for the Scottish Gardener the reputation that has been assigned to it by many good judges--of being one of the best practical periodicals of the day.
