Description

As the business need for interoperability among heterogeneous systems has arisen, organizations such as the Department of Defense are turning to Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) as the technical solution to integrate these systems within their enterprise. Web Services is a powerful and favored instantiation of SOA backed by standards and a strong technological base. However, Web Services have traditionally been built upon technologies that lack predictable performance that real-time systems in an enterprise require. For those systems with real-time requirements, Web Services have generally not been sufficient to satisfy the requirement for deterministic behavior. Recent advances in real-time technologies are opening the door for Web Services to be employed in the real-time domain. This paper evaluates how one of those advances, Real-time Java technologies, may be synthesized with Web Services to enable deterministic performance in order to meet this emerging need.
