Dunning Read

Dunning Read Conservation Area is on the grounds of what was once a large psychiatric hospital called Chicago State Hospital. Before being converted into an asylum for the mentally ill, Dunning Read was the location of a poor farm. A smaller mental health center continues to operate on the grounds but much of the land is now being returned back to its natural state as a wetland.
