Mrs. Caroline Wells Healey Dall died at her home in Washington, D.C., December seventeenth, 1912, in the ninetieth year of her age.
Part of the twentieth paragraph of her last will and testament reads as follows:
"I... will that 'The College, Market and Court,' - for which I received from Alfred University, New York, the first (LL.D.) degree given in modem times to a woman, - be reprinted... with the address given to the Alumni in conferring it."
Mrs. Dall justly regarded this work as summarizing the data and arguments for the emancipation of women from the restrictions which, in her youth, hampered them in their rights to labor and to learn. This was the message which during her active lifetime she delivered to the world. Social obstacles, hardly conceivable today, lay continually in her path. With a few other chosen souls she "bore the burden and heat of the day." A pioneer, she met with the fate not unusual with pioneers.
Others who followed the trail hewn with so much difficulty, when it had become a fashionable promenade, are better known today; but the impartial historian of the future will restore their due meed of honor to the pioneers.
