Description

Excerpt from The Blasting of Rock in Mines, Quarries, Tunnels Etc: A Scientific and Practical Treatise for the Use of Engineers and Others Engaged in Mining, Quarrying, Tunnelling,& and for Mining and Engineering Students

The present work is based on the results of a large number of experiments, which were carried out by us about three years ago, with the object to discover the true principle of the resistance of rock to a blast, respecting which further researches were necessary in consequence of the rules and formulæ usually met with in works on rock blasting proving to be very erroneous when applied to the ordinary blasting operations of mining, tunnelling, &c.

This work is, therefore, an attempt to supply the need of a correct theory, with reliable rules and formulæ for the necessary calculations, the information on explosives, fuses, &c., being added to make the work complete In itself. The correctness of the rules and formulæ is demonstrated by the results of a series of blasting experiments, and by the theory on which they are based being quite in accord with true mechanical principles.
