Lucienne fears her father has been abducted for a priceless necklace, given to him for safekeeping during Mobile, Alabama's 1879 Mardi Gras revelries. Benjamin Hallett guards valuables for Order uv Imbibers members, but he entrusts the necklace to Lucienne, with only an initial to indicate who gave it to him. The initial is that of handsome Wesley Biggs and three other OUI members. When the necklace proves to be stolen and its owner murdered, Lucienne and Wesley set out to track down the culprit. As they narrow the field of suspects, Lucienne worries that Wesley's flirtations are not sincere, but a ruse to conceal his plan to victimize her, as he may already have victimized her father.
