The Rough Riders: A Romance

1927. A fictionalized tale based upon the Spanish War and exploits of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders. The novel begins: Leonora Mead was watching at the window; not the sky, which was cloudy, threatening rain, to add to the February slush in East Forty-sixth Street; not the houses opposite, which looked dingy in their smoked brownstone even though the best families did live in them; not the sidewalk, where children, bundled in heavy coats, were walking sedately with their nurses; but a point a hundred yards to the west where a young man coming either afoot or by hansom would turn off Fifth Avenue if the young woman he cared for above all his other possessions happened to live on that particular street between the Avenue and the East River.
