Derek Bloomfield was a skinny freckle-faced kid who graduated dead last in his high school class, flunked out of college in his freshman year, joined the army, received a Dear John letter from his girlfriend, and got fired his first day on the job as a beer truck driver. Yet he earned a PhD, enjoyed a successful career as a Mathematics Professor at the same college he flunked out of, wrote nine mathematics textbooks, built his own stone house and raised four successful kids.
