Description

This is a NAVAL HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER SAN DIEGO CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A444133. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In 1994 U.S. Navy recruits (N=3,776) and in 1996 navy recruits (N=l, 954) were administered a battery of instruments designed to collect histories of abusive behaviors. The results show that both samples were demographically similar. The 1994 sample reported a lower percentage of parental divorce, a stricter level of parental discipline, a larger percentage of witnessed parental violence, a higher rate of suicidal ideation, and somewhat lower rates of counseling (for males only), a higher age at first intercourse (for males only) and fewer different sexual partners. The 1994 female recruits report a nonsignificantly higher percentage of total contact childhood sexual abuse. No percentage of the 1994 male recruits reported inflicting intimate partner violence. A higher percentage of all 1994 recruits reported sustaining intimate partner violence. A higher percentage of the 1994 female, but no male, recruits report being physically injured by an intimate partner. A higher percentage of 1994 female recruits report being the victims of rape. No significant differences were found between the percentage of 1994 and 1995 male recruits who reported perpetrating rape. The results of this study provide partial support of the hypothesis that recruits with different maltreatrnent histories enlist at different times of the year.
