After the tragic death of their parents, fifteen-year-old Michael Kelly must look after his younger siblings, Joe and Carli, and make sure they all stay together, even if it means living with their estranged grandfather, a man they've never met. Their course set, the children make the long trek from Texas to Thunder Mountain in the great Pacific Northwest.

More bad news greets them on their arrival. Their grandfather has died and his neighbors, a kindly couple named Ben and Mari Beth Strongbow, have been appointed their guardians. The children move into the Strongbow home and try to begin a new life. They soon become familiar with the beautiful Sacred Valleys and the Guardian Spirits who protect this land, and spend time with Chief Blackhawk, hereditary Guardian of the Valleys and godfather to the Kelly children.

Life is good for awhile, and Mike is hopeful that he, Joe, and Carli can find healing. Then evil comes to their home when a deranged criminal stalks the children and threatens their ranch. Joe is kidnapped and it seems that all hope is lost for his return.
