Description

Introduction from the Author

The first coeducational college in New England, Bates College was founded in 1855 by Maine abolitionists and has always been governed on principles of egalitarianism. Bates has never had fraternities or sororities, since no exclusive organizations are allowed on campus. Traditionally, Bates has been a school that produces “preachers and teachers.” Here, you’ll find that most people are more interested in giving back to the community rather than taking from it.

Today, Bates is known for its academic excellence more than anything else. It is one of the most selective schools in the country, and the Bates faculty is nationally recognized. Bates is also known for its distinctive international study abroad program, senior-thesis program, and service-learning programs. Around two-thirds of all graduating seniors have studied off campus, and Bates students have studied in more than 70 countries since 1990. Most Bates students have to write a senior thesis in order to graduate. This is an extensive project, developed with the aid of a faculty member, which demonstrates a studentÂ’s mastery of a subject related to his or her major. The Center for Service Learning was founded in 1995 and sponsors projects locally and internationally. Yearly, Bates students participate in more than 1,200 community-based projects.

Many students choose Bates because of its reputation for academic excellence. Students also select Bates for its size. Bates is a small school, with a student body of almost 1,800 and a 10-to-1 student to faculty ratio. The Bates setting is a very intimate one; students can recognize almost everyone on campus and often develop very deep friendships. The low student-to-faculty ratio allows students to develop close relationships with their professors, who are generally very accessible.

Bates is progressing at a rapid rate. The school has made numerous improvements to the facilities, including adding new gym equipment and flat-screen computers for many of the labs. Visiting professors often bring their talents to teach courses in their areas of expertise, and Bates offers new courses every year to reflect a changing world. The atmosphere at Bates is very dynamic, with each class bringing a new aspect to the school.

If youÂ’re looking at Bates, you probably already know about its academic reputation. But what you donÂ’t know is what itÂ’s like to live and work here, day after day, for four years. Hopefully, this guide will help give you a glimpse of what life at Bates is really like.
