When Frank Herschel discovers a crashed car in the Canadian wilderness, police suspect him of staging the accident to cover up a murder.

Frank soon becomes a target himself. He is shot at, then narrowly escapes death when his car is forced off the road. Planted evidence implicates him in murder, and he flees to his hometown in Maine. There he seeks the help of his half-brother, Sam, an ex-cop.

Police eventually drop charges, but Frank is obsessed with finding answers. He finds them all too soon, placing his life and the lives of others in deadly danger.
